In America, there is a surprising thing, which is that everyone can find a store everywhere. The huge store provides many kinds of products from city to country in America. It is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is really a huge company not only in America, but also in the world. However, there is an argument about new plan of Wal-Mart in a small country area, Carbondale. This huge company wants to build a new big Wal-Mart in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area. Some people say that it can help the small country to develop more and more with a big store. But, others say that the new supercenter will be harmful for a small country area and can destroy small businesses, because it is so huge that it can attract people (Jacobs, 2005).
Wal-Mart is huge company, so it can help the small country area’s community. So, the plan about building a new Wal-Mart in Carbondale should be accepted in public, because it makes the quality of people’s lives increase, it makes the small town be developed, and it causes competition in the markets.
First, the new supercenter will be helpful for increasing the quality of people’s lives, because it can provide many more jobs than now. Actually, Wal-Mart is so big that it has provided a lot of jobs. According to Hoenig (2004), “In 2005, Wal-Mart created 125,000 U.S jobs, and is continuously adding thousands each month” (para. 16). It can be more helpful for people who have low income than the rich. In addition, Wal-Mart provides low-price products, so many people who do not have high income can buy whatever they want in Wal-Mart (Locke, 2004). So, there will be a lot of jobs and low price products at Wal-Mart in Carbondale.
Second, Wal-Mart encourages the community of small country in development. With building the supercenter, there will be other new stores, because the new building shows the possibility of development of town. Because there is any possibility for development, the Wal-Mart wants to build the new center, then owners of other companies will try to build their company, also. Finally, it will be connected to growing the small town’s economy.
Third, the new supercenter can make any competition in the market. In fact, building a new supercenter is so threatening to other stores. So, the other companies should make good and low price products if they want to survive in the market. Not only do other companies make good products, but also Wal-Mart has to provide high quality product for making profit. So, all companies can be interacted, then people can get better goods from them.
According to Randy Auxier, “Murphysboro should not be foolish enough to believe that the right way to fix its financial problems is sales tax revenue from Wal-Mart” (as cited in Jacobs, 2005). However, it is not true, because the tax from Wal-Mart is actually helpful for government. In Hoenig’s article, “The truth is that all Wal-Mart does is provide low prices, serve communities with long hours, employ thousands of people and pay millions of taxes – over $ 61 million in the state of Illinois alone” (2004, para. 17). As you can see, the tax from Wal-Mart is about $ 61 million. It can be helpful for the state where the new supercenter will be built.
In conclusion, the Wal-Mart is so helpful that the new plan to build a new center in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area should be accepted for people’s living quality, town’s development, and good products. It will be helpful for people and government.

Argument Essay
Saving Penguins
In the South Pole, there is the cutest and the poorest animal which has black and white colors and which cannot fly, even though it has two wings. Also, it cannot walk in the normal way, so its walk looks like that of a toddler. Its name is penguin. Penguin is an animal which is adapted for water. According to Defenders of Wildlife, “Penguins can spend up to 75% of their lives in the water. They do all of their hunting in the water” (n.d., para. 7). Also, they inhabit some areas in the Southern Hemisphere from tropical areas to Antarctica. In addition, some larger species of penguins can live in the cold weather, but other smaller penguins live in the warm areas (Defenders of Wildlife, n.d.). Their appearances are so cute that people love them. In addition, people like their walking because it is like toddling. However, they have suffered from a serious problem called global warming, which is making the temperature of earth increase steadily. Today, many people have recognized that penguins have been endangered and threatened in the world for a long time. There were already over half of all penguin species on the threatened or endangered lists 6 years ago (Yoon, 2001). Because of the global warming, their habitats are disappearing constantly. According to Yoon’s article, “…warming seas and a decline in sea ice were linked to a 50 percent drop in numbers in a well-studied population of emperor penguins over the last 50 years.” (2001, para, 22). They are losing their habitats and abilities to survive for themselves because of global warming. If people will not care for them more carefully, we will lose them, also.
For saving endangered penguins, people should stop using their own private cars and equip some filter equipments to reduce emission of carbon dioxide, establish the World Penguin Association for only penguins endangered by global warming or hunting, and temporarily make an artificial place for penguins to live with appropriate temperature until global warming disappears.
First of all, people should equip the filter equipment to their own private cars for reducing emission of carbon dioxide. Today, many people have their own private cars and supply their cars with gasoline once or twice an every week. However, when the fossil fuel such as gasoline is burned, an amount of the carbon dioxide, one of greenhouse gases, is emitted to the air. According to Earthguide, “Today the amount of carbon dumped globally into the atmosphere corresponds, on average, to one ton per person on the planet, each year. In the United States, carbon-based energy is especially important. The average American per capita emission is 5 tons of carbon annually” (n.d., para. 4). Because of the amount of emission of carbon dioxide, the temperature of world is increasing annually so that the number of penguins is decreasing. For this reason, it should be required to equip the filter equipment, which can purify carbon dioxide, in all cars for saving endangered penguins. In Lee-Chua’s article, “10 Ways to fight global warming,” the author said, “Reduce driving miles. Walk, bike, carpool or take public transport. Avoid commuting in rush hour to lessen traffic time and fuel burned” (2007, para. 22). Because it is impossible to stop using cars, people should reduce their own private cars and equip the filter systems as much as they can until new energy resource, which is not harmful for environment, is discovered.
Second, people should establish a World Penguin Association for only penguins which suffered from global warming and hunting. There are already many associations for endangered animals in the world, such as World Wild Life (WWF). They have helped to protect many endangered animals such as elephants, tigers, giant pandas, and whales (World Wild Life, n.d.). It is helpful for many endangered species, but it should be more specific to help them. That is, penguins which suffered from global warming need the association, which can help them with specific and detailed information about global warming. Through the association, people can donate their money for penguins, and it will be helpful for saving them. In addition, it promotes a movement for saving penguins in public, so it makes people feel it is easy to join the association. If more people want to help them, the effect will become bigger.
Third, people should provide penguins the artificial places where the appropriate temperature can be controlled for endangered penguins. Now, glaciers have been melted steadily, so some penguins are in danger of losing their habitats. If the temperature of the world is going up continually, the number of penguins which lose their homes are increasing. So, until the global warming would stop, we have to make some safe place for them, because we have caused global warming by human activities. If the money for foundation of the artificial places is too expensive to be afforded by a government, the association for penguins can help it with donation, as I mentioned above.
Some people say that global warming is not an unusual phenomenon, so we do not have to be concerned about it; however, it is true that the temperature of world is increasing, so the number of penguins is decreasing. In addition, there are many studies about increasing sea level. According to Lovgren’s (2004) article, “Warming to cause catastrophic rise in sea level?,” “The biggest danger, many experts warn, is that global warming will cause sea levels to rise dramatically. Thermal expansion has already raised the oceans 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters)” (2004, para. 4). It means that the sea level is higher than a few decades before, because the glaciers have been melted for the time by global warming. Moreover, because of it, many penguins are losing their habitats. Sometimes they can be drowned, even though penguin is one of the underwater animals (Defenders of Wildlife, n.d.).
In conclusion, people should equip the filter system in their cars for reducing amounts of emission of carbon dioxide, found the World Penguin Association for helping only penguin, and provide penguins safe places for new habitats. The more we pay attention to penguins, the more likely penguins can stay alive. Because the global warming has occurred by human activities, we have a responsibility for save them. If penguins would disappear in few decades, it is possible that same problem will occur in other situations, and it is also possible for the same situation that is happening to the penguin to happen to people. So, penguins have to survive not only for themselves, but also for human.

Penguins in trouble worldwide
In Carol Kaesuk Yoon’s (2001) article, “Penguins in trouble worldwide,” she writes about both the facts that many species of penguins are endangered by some pollution, and how to solve the problem. First, she mentions that there are many disappearing penguins, even if they are different species. She adds there are already over half of all penguin species on the threatened or endangered lists. And, she explains that penguins are endangered by climate change, overfishing and oil spills. She claims that their lovely appearance and people’s attentions can be solutions of the problem. She says that the toxic iron can be one of the causes of temperature change of the ocean, also. According to her article, melting glacier is real problem for the decline of penguins’ population, in fact. However, she claims that the problem can be overcome by attracting people’s attention with their cute appearance. She gives some examples such as safeguarding them with money from tourists and movements by companies.
In fact, the problem about the threat to penguins has been mentioned for a long time. Although there are many causes of the problem, especially, global warming is one of the huge causes that is not easy to settle. Because it is an enormous problem, it is the great way that tourists and some companies can help the endangered penguins. So, it is necessary to get help from individuals and big commercial companies to solve the problem, and we need to think about the solution on the world level, also.
First of all, any help individuals can provide is necessary to save the endangered penguins. It is not really important whether their help is big or small. For example, you can help the penguins only by reducing the use of your own private car, because it causes global warming with some toxic gas. Even though it is not directly related to saving the threatened penguins, it does not make global warming worse. Otherwise, if you have enough money to donate for the treatment of the penguins injured by either global warming or any accident, donation to any animal association can be one of the great helps. Whatever you do, these things can help penguins to survive and to be treated.
Second, help of the commercial companies such as advertisements and donations is also significant in a recovery of a bad environment. In this case, there can be two different types of aid. First, it is possible to encourage people’s movement, which is connected with individual real life, to change their everyday lifestyles. If one company tries to promote the movement with advertisement about helping the endangered penguins and it is successful, the company can make an enormous number of people think about the problem with only one advertisement. The second way is that the company directly donates to other associations related to penguins. With donating their money, the company can help the endangered animal, and also gets the effect of good public relations
Finally, countries in the world have to think of the problem as their own problem. That is, it is possible to recover the clean environment when a lot of countries are connected to solving the problem. Because the world is not separated, all countries are responsible for recovering the environment and saving the endangered animals such as penguins. So, all countries should join together to protect not only the endangered penguins, but also any kinds of threatened animals. Moreover, the governments of the countries have to control their industrial factories, whether they cause global warming or not. It will be helpful in the future to stop global warming.
In conclusion, it is necessary for saving penguins to encourage people and commercial companies to pay attention and to donate for saving penguins. Additionally, getting all countries to work together is also important. Before you criticize environmental problems such as global warming, it would be helpful for the endangered animal if you think about what you can do for them in your situation. In the future, if our descendants cannot see the lovely penguins, it will be considered one of the biggest of our faults. We are responsible for preserving our earth with a clean environment. If we try to preserve our environment, this kind of problem will disappear in our life.

Penguins and global warming (Summary and response #1)
Penguins and global warming
In Jimenez-David’s article, “Penguins and global warming,” she writes that there is a remarkable problem between penguins and global warming. First, she mentions the animation movie, “Happy Feet,” about penguins, which included an environmental message to show that penguins have been endangered by global warming around Antarctica. According to the article, the environmental problem is caused by not only global warming, but also pollution. Moreover, she explains that the sea level is going up steadily because global warming causes the temperature of the earth to rise, so glaciers will be melt in the future. However, she claims that we can prevent this global warming if we try to pay attention more about the cause of the problem and change our bad lifestyle.
As the author mentions, because of the rising of the temperature due to global warming, penguins have become one of the endangered animals. Actually, penguins are considered an Antarctic animal, so they need cold weather. However, today, the glaciers tend to melt themselves because of high temperature. If this situation still continues, there will be no penguin anymore in the future. Moreover, this situation is for not only penguins, but also other animals. Therefore, people should use public transportation and the industrial factories should have purifiers. Moreover, people should pay more attention to endangered animals such as penguins.
First, people have to use more public transportation rather than their own cars. As you can see in the many studies, global warming is caused by carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuel. If all people use their own cars, the emission of carbon dioxide would be a more serious problem. Because we cannot stop using the vehicle, use of the public vehicles is the best choice we can make. In addition, the public transportation can transport from 20 to 30 persons. It is more efficient than the privately owned car, also.
Next, the owners of factories should equip each industrial factory with a purifier. The purifier is the equipment that purifies the polluted air. In fact, it is not really wrong that the global warming was started during the industrial revolution. Because many factories emit amounts of the polluted air when they are working, the earth cannot purify all of them. So, all factories should be required to have the purifier.
Finally, people have to take care of the endangered animals such as penguins. With global warming, there are a lot of endangered animals, even besides penguins. First of all, they need our attention. Actually, they are in danger of disappearing forever because we did not pay any attention to them before. If we had known that global warming would happen and it world cause some animals to disappear, we could keep the fresh air of the earth. Because we did not think about them, we could not know what would happen, today.
In conclusion, people should use their privately owned cars less for conserving the endangered animals. Also, the industrial factories should be equipped with the purifiers and people have to pay attention to the endangered animals. Even though some areas already have the problems, it is not really late to preserve them. If we try to find the way to save the endangered animals and make the environment fresh, we can keep our earth in clean condition.

However, she claims that we can prevent this global warming if we try to pay attention more about the cause of the problem and change our bad lifestyle.
As the author mentions, because of the rising of the temperature due to global warming, penguins have become one of the endangered animals. Actually, penguins are considered an Antarctic animal, so they need cold weather. However, today, the glaciers tend to melt themselves because of high temperature. If this situation still continues, there will be no penguin anymore in the future. Moreover, this situation is for not only penguins, but also other animals. Therefore, people should use public transportation and the industrial factories should have purifiers. Moreover, people should pay more attention to endangered animals such as penguins.
First, people have to use more public transportation rather than their own cars. As you can see in the many studies, global warming is caused by carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuel. If all people use their own cars, the emission of carbon dioxide would be a more serious problem. Because we cannot stop using the vehicle, use of the public vehicles is the best choice we can make. In addition, the public transportation can transport from 20 to 30 persons. It is more efficient than the privately owned car, also.
Next, the owners of factories should equip each industrial factory with a purifier. The purifier is the equipment that purifies the polluted air. In fact, it is not really wrong that the global warming was started during the industrial revolution. Because many factories emit amounts of the polluted air when they are working, the earth cannot purify all of them. So, all factories should be required to have the purifier.
Finally, people have to take care of the endangered animals such as penguins. With global warming, there are a lot of endangered animals, even besides penguins. First of all, they need our attention. Actually, they are in danger of disappearing forever because we did not pay any attention to them before. If we had known that global warming would happen and it world cause some animals to disappear, we could keep the fresh air of the earth. Because we did not think about them, we could not know what would happen, today.
In conclusion, people should use their privately owned cars less for conserving the endangered animals. Also, the industrial factories should be equipped with the purifiers and people have to pay attention to the endangered animals. Even though some areas already have the problems, it is not really late to preserve them. If we try to find the way to save the endangered animals and make the environment fresh, we can keep our earth in clean condition.
